Cutty Sark 150th Anniversary

Cutty Sark 150th Anniversary

At the weekend we were invited along to visit the Cutty Sark’s 150th Anniversary event!

The Cutty Sark is the world’s only surviving tea clipper and now sits proudly next to the National Maritime Museum. It is the top London attraction in Greenwhich and it isn’t difficult to see why! It is a great family friendly, historical and educational day out. There is something for everyone.

Initially I was worried about travelling to the attraction but it couldn’t have been easier. The DLR goes straight to the Cutty Sark (For Maritime Greenwhich) station which is just a 2 minute walk away!

Upon arriving at the boat it was quite impressive to see! Zac was fascinated looking up at it. We headed straight in where we were greeted by the friendly staff who gave Zac a little activity book to fill in as he walked around.

You can opt to have headphones where you can listen to an audio commentary as you explore the boat. It explains all about the boats history, shipping tea back from China, and also facts about its current condition. The Cutty Sark has almost 90% of its original vessel intact. You can see some original features of the boat such as the Bell and Steering Wheel.

There is even a display of colourful original figureheads collected by Long John Silver. They are quite incredible to look at!

On board there is a number of levels to explore (don’t worry there is a lift too!). You can view what the galley would have looked like and you can even jump in bed in the sleeping quarters!

Zac loved exploring the boat there was so much for him to do, from nautical themed shape sorting & knot tieing games, Cutty Sark replica boats to look at and interactive screens and telephones.

For the event they also had lots of family activities on board. They had a story teller who was amazing, she was so animated and got all the children involved – she had quite a crowd! There was also face painting and arts and crafts on board where children could make their own bunting!

Overall we had a really lovely day out. We visited with a few family members ranging in age from 50 to 1 and everyone really enjoyed the day! If you wanted to book tickets to visit and explore the Cutty Sark you can BOOK HERE.
