After Zac’s Under The Sea Birthday Party I had some blue jelly left over (I forgot to put it out oops). So I was inspired to do some Under The Sea Messy Play. This is also a great Sensory Play activity for babies. All of the elements are completely edible so perfect for little ones who like to explore with their mouth!
The Blue Jelly “Sea”
I made the blue jelly by making up one sachet of Dr. Oetker Geleatine as instructed. Before putting it in the fridge to set, I added a few drops of blue food colouring till I got the desired deep sea blue colour. I then just mashed it up with a fork before putting it out to be played with.
The Yellow Rice “Sand”
I made the yellow rice by adding a few drops of yellow food colouring to a saucepan of water. I then added the rice and boiled it in the yellow water so that it absorbed the colour. Doing it this way helped to stop too much of the food colouring rubbing off during the activity. I also put it in the fridge for a while to ensure it was completely cool and dry before putting it out.
The Green(ish) Spaghetti “Seaweed”
The seaweed didn’t come out quite as well as I had planned. I’m not sure if it’s because we only had wholemeal spaghetti or the method just wasn’t very good! I tried to boil the spaghetti in some water which had green food colouring in (similar to what I did with the rice). But the green food colouring just didn’t seem to take and all rubbed off straight away. Others have since suggested leaving the spaghetti overnight in a bag of food colouring.
The Messy Play
Zac had his friend Jenson round for a play date so we decided to try the activity with both of them! Before starting everything we made sure to put down our Messy Me Mat to make cleaning up an easier process and protect the floor from any food colouring! Zac also wore his Messy Me Tunic to help protect his clothes (Gifted). Both the Mat and Tunic are amazing quality and so easy to clean afterwards.
Both of the boys loved the activity but interacted it with it very differently. Zac was fascinated by all the different textures and kept carefully touching it all saying “wow”. His friend Jenson was far more interested in eating it all! But that’s fine as it was all completely edible, so as long as they had fun exploring! We popped some little rubber fish in for them to play with in the different foods (These were party favours from their birthday party, and were gifted from Party Delights)
I hope this has giving you some ideas for some edible messy play of your own! If you try it out then don’t forget to tag me or send in your pictures!
Thanks for reading!
