When posting on social media it is vital to chose the right hashtags. By choosing ‘good hashtags’ you can improve your post reach, impressions and likes. A good hashtag could improve reach by tens of thousands!
So what makes a ‘good hashtag’?
- Relevant
- Popular
- Not considered ‘Spam’
It is easy to find popular hashtags and ones which have been used millions of times. Really simple hashtags such as #February and #valentinesday have been used millions of times on Instagram – but they are actually ‘bad hashtags’.
Hashtags which have been overused are considered as spam and so Instagram does not show posts which use these. It is best to avoid any hashtags which have been used over 5 million times.
Even hashtags which have been used a couple of million times aren’t the best ones to use. The likelihood of your post being popular and near the top of these hashtags is unliklely – so you are better off looking for what is called “low hanging fruit”. These are hashtags which are fairly popular and used quite regularly but there isn’t too much competition so you are more likely to appear higher for these.
Lastly your hashtag should be relevant. You are more likley to see better engagement and even new followers if you use relevant hashtags. We all know Mrs Hinch hashtags are popular, but people using and searching these hashtag are looking for cleaning, home and interior inspiration not your baby in the bath or your cat sitting in the garden.
