During our recent trip to Cornwall we were kindly gifted a day out at The Cornish Seal Sanctuary.
It is set in the Helford Estuary, by the beautiful village of Gweek in Cornwall. The Seal Sanctuary are a Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Release centre for seals, and most seasons they rescue over 60 pups.
The Animals
Zac had so much fun running around and seeing all the different animals – they have much more than just seals! All of the viewing areas are low down which is brilliant as Zac was able to walk around and look at them himself!
Seals
The first animals we saw were the seals! Zac was fascinated watching them swim around, he didn’t stop pointing and laughing.
We even got to watch the seal feeding! The staff are so knowledgeable and are clearly passionate about the seals. They introduced each of them by name explaining their back story. Some had minor injuries and were on the road to recovery and release. others had disabilities and the sanctuary was their permanent home.
Sealions
As well as seals the Sanctuary is home to a number of sealions. The viewing are for these is brilliant. There is a large underwater level window where you can them swimming past.
Otters & Penguins
At the sanctuary they also have otters and penguins! The otters area is down a lovely shaded forest walk. The Sanctuary is so much bigger than I imagined and their is so much beautiful scenery.
Zac loved the penguins, there was a number of different viewing points to make sure he was able to get the best view of them!
Ponies, Sheep and Goat
There is even a small area with some farm yard animals. Zac loved the goats!
This area is up a hill with a huge open green for children to run around. Zac had the best time being able to just run free!
Play Area
There is a fantastic play area for children! There are slides and climbing apparatus, as well as lots of fun and educational activities about the seals.
The Food
There was a small café which sold sausage rolls, pasties, chips and kids meals. I would try to avoid the lunch time rush as a lot of it does sell out!
The kids meal deals were great, they got half a sausage rolls, fruit, crisps and drink.
During the feeding talks you learn about how dangerous plastic waste can be for these animals in the wild, so it was lovely to see that the sanctuary do lots to reduce plastic waste. They don’t even sell bottled water, instead it comes in a can!
Overall we had an amazing time at The Cornish Seal Sanctuary. It was much bigger than I thought and was a full day out. If you are visiting Cornwall definitely put this on your list of places to visit!
