So we have finally completed our first month of weaning (mostly Baby Led Weaning), and I would call it a success! We have had everything from clean plates and smiley faces to tantrums and chewed up carrot in my hair. What a rollercoaster it has been!
As you may have read in my previous post, Starting Baby Led Weaning, we have (mostly) been doing BLW with a veg first approach. This basically means we have tried to start by introducing vegetables and savoury flavours before any sweet fruits.
Week 1
We introduced 1 flavour at a time and kept re-visiting the same foods. We stuck with 1 meal a day, lunch.
During this week we tried:
- Broccoli
- Carrot
- Peas
Week 2
We continued with the single savoury flavours. This week we introduced some salad as well as other vegetables. I tried a few different ways of cutting up his salad, he found the sticks easiest to pick up and eat. He bites little bits off but mostly spits it back out. He is struggling biting harder foods as we still have no teeth, but he does try.
During this week we tried:
- Green beans
- Cucumber (a firm favourite)
- Mixed peppers
Week 3
This week we introduced a second meal, Zac now has dinner and lunch. He even had his first Sunday roast! We have also started to introduced some other savoury items which aren’t vegetables! I found the best way to cook potato’s for Zac was to slice them, part boil them and then cook them in the oven. These were easy for him to pick up, he didn’t eat them but did enjoy sucking them!
We tried a lot this week including:
- Asparagus
- Avocado
- Potato
- Baby corn
- Organix pea puffs
Week 4:
We are now up to three meals a day! Well that didn’t take long, this boy certainly likes his food. I am so proud of how well he eats now. He picks up his food and will give anything a try! He actually bites bits off and eats some … I can tell because I see the evidence in his nappy! We are still having five 8oz bottles a day as we aren’t eating loads … but he is certainly getting there. I feel like he may be ready to drop a bottle soon as we are struggling to fit in time to have all of his bottles and food. Sometimes I think he gets confused and isn’t sure if he is hungry or tired because he is missing some naps due to having meals. This results in him having a tantrum in his high chair till I get him out and he spits his food in my hair…the joys of motherhood.
This week we tried:
- Boiled egg
- Mashed potato
- Chicken
- Mamia carrot melty puffs (he LOVES these)
And that completes our first month! At the start I couldn’t see Zac ever eating food, it felt like we were just getting nowhere. I cant believe how quickly he picked it up. The first week was definitely the hardest, and I did give in and give him some puree, and he still has some now if we are out. Sometimes he will have a pouch of Ella’s Kitchen or if we are at home I will just mash up some boiled vegetables so it is lumpy. I’m not saying we did BLW perfectly but the way we done it worked for us and there was no confusion.
I hope this has maybe helped some of you or at least given you some hope that they will pick it up in the end!
Happy weaning!
I really like how descriptive you have been regarding your BLW journey and it seems you were able to introduce a good variety of foods over a short period of time. I just had a few questions;
We’re there any foods that your little one wouldn’t except, even after trying a few times? I found my LB would not eat avacado even after trying lots of times. Also how do you cook your veg and how do you manage salt content if you are sharing meals as a family. Thank you again for a very informative read on BLW I can see how this blog will help others and myself if I was to yo through BLW again.
